transition area
Besides the obvious gear necessary to the sport of triathlon (ie bike, bike shoes, running shoes, etc), there is one item that I’ve found to be indispensable—the transition bag. My appreciation for it begins the night before a race. There’s something very satisfying about organizing and packing my gear into the bag that will stay with me from arrival on race day, through each transition, and will have dry clothes and hopefully a protein bar for me, after the race.
Transition area is an exciting place for me for many reasons. The energy in there before the race is awesome—everyone is carefully setting up their little spot, some are warming up, stretching, bonding, laughing, some are nervous, but mostly, we’re all ready to do it and to see what we’re really made of. We all know, of course, it’s not going to be easy, and even painful, but that’s the point— we all just can’t wait to start! Transition area is a place during the race where you can, sort of, gauge how you’re doing in relation to everyone else by seeing how many bikes are still racked as you enter T1. It’s also a cool place simply because of all the cool gear—each bike is someones carefully tuned and admired baby.
Setting up the perfect transition spot isn’t as important as having everything you need within your reach…in that transition bag. My bag is a company holiday gift from BioCentric, where I am creative director…and I love it.
